Alligator Alcatraz is the brainchild of Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, who recently

proposed converting an old Air Force training facility into an illegal immigrant detention center. “I call it, ‘Alligator Alcatraz,’ AG Uthmeier explained at the time, noting that it would be suicidal to escape from the detention center, since it’s completely surrounded by the Everglades. The suggestion was immediately embraced and fast-tracked by Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis – and eight days later it was operational.
