Memorial Day Regret: I Did Not Serve
What I want to point out is that many of us celebrate the occasion in a bit of bad faith. That
includes me. In many of us—again that includes me—is the lingering thought that the reasons we did not serve were not entirely idealistic. A touch of cowardice might have been buried somewhere not too far below the surface. Maybe more than a touch. It was so convenient to be against the war. It got you out of a lot of things.
